I am a Thai artist in an early stage of my artistic career ,born and base in Udonthani , Northeast of Thailand, where I also run an emerging art space called Noir Row Art Space (https://www.facebook.com/NOIRROW ) which formed in late 2017.
Aside from art, I presently work in a construction (small family) business where I had been brought up in. Therefore, a hint of industrial material can sometimes be seen applied in my work.
Ranging from 2D works to installation, my practices are usually site responsive and informed through manipulation and juxtaposition of found objects which I explore possible synthesized meaning and metaphysical language between them that could imply sociological narratives.
Currently I have been reading ‘Remaking the Readymade’ by Adina Kamien-Kazhden (published in 2018) which I found truthfully inform certain aspects of my work.
I finished BA Psychology from Thammasat University in Thailand and MFA from Chelsea College of Art and Design in UK, my works rooted in how the self could be defined and unfolded.
Since 2014, after settling back in my hometown, such inquiry of identity is stretched, extended, and can be seen as analogy to the body of the geography. That is, I further examine how the area can be disclosed from its multifaceted layer of context as well as its stratification of inherited history.
Udonthani houses the well-known UNESCO world heritage Ban Chiang Pre-Historic Site. The town was also a former strategic settlement where 3 major US military bases were set up during the Vietnam War.
My initial investigation had developed into an experimental practice through the curation of ‘PARALLEL : The Ramasun Station Art Trail’ which had occurred onsite at The Ramasun Station (AKA : The 7th Radio Research Field Station ,1 of the 3 US military bases in Udonthani). The present subject-matter that has been explicitly intrigued me and I have been exploring continuously is the associated coherence and traversed relationship that between the US military-related settlements during the Cold War and their impact upon the interpretation of local indigeneity. For instance, illegal excavation of Ban Chiang site that was stimulated by collectors from the US, these artifacts were then flown out of the country through US Military Air Base in Udonthani.
As according to Maurizio Peleggi in his article ‘Excavating Southeast Asia’s prehistory in the Cold War: American archaeology in neocolonial Thailand’ as during the turn of the 1970s was when the US military and archaeological missions were heavily undertaken in South East Asia. Such archaeological missions can be seen as liberation of the past colonial power toward democratic free world as well as a form of neutral countering of the hostility of military incursion. That is to say, this concurrence was no less bias than the former colonial governing of the region, it can be read as a new kind of colonized idiosyncrasy under the wing of the US itself.
